Fring App Allows iPhone 4 Video Calls Over 3G

Article Date: Monday 12th July 2010

Developer group Fring has today announced the latest update to its application which will allow users with jail-broken iPhone 4 handsets to make video calls over 3G to selected mobile devices including Android phones.

The Fring blog currently features a video clip which shows a video call to a non-Apple phone. Although Fring have acknowledged that the quality is not particularly high, the video shows that the service obviously does work.

The app supports multi-tasking, so it can run in the background and alert users to new video calls, voice calls or chat at any time the mobile device is switched on.

The app also features a social stream showing a chronological list of all tweets, Facebook updates, chats and calls in one place, as well as an address book to manage buddy lists and merges contacts.

The app is the first to set up in opposition to Apple's official FaceTime video calling software, which is restricted to making calls over wi-fi and only works between iPhone 4's.

Critics are hopeful that this app from Fring could encourage Apple to make FaceTime available over 3G sooner rather than later.

However, experts have warned that by jail-breaking their iPhone, users risk downloading malicious software in the future.
